Catastrophe theoretical models in semantics

چکیده

A catastrophe is a type of instability in a simple dynamic system whose unfolding (=evolution) is structurally stable. Examples of commonly experienced catastrophes are sudden changes in a real system, e.g. switches between two states in a buckling plate or the breakdown of stability as in a bridge which collapses. These physical models show the direction for more abstract models as in the case of language (cf. Wildgen, 1990). 1.1 Order phenomena in the ecology of man

A Mathematical Mechanism of Infrared Catastrophe

We derive a mathematical mechanism of infrared catastrophe from the idea for the proof in [22, 23] and generalize it so that we can apply it to several models in quantum field theory. We define the Carleman operator from the operator-theoretical pull-through formula on ground states. Characterizing infrared catastrophe by the Carleman operator, we study the mechanism of infrared catastrophe. An...

Economic Growth as a Nonlinear and Discontinuous Process

Structural changes were the main focus of many studies in recent years. Changes which alter the socio-economic status of a nation from deprived and traditional nature to a developed and modern one. The main hypothesis of this study is that, the economic development does not occur through a regular flow of life (linear fashion), and without resilience, but it certainly needs to pass through a mo...

Catastrophe Theory in Social Psychology: Some Applications to Attitudes and Social Behavior'

Much past mathematical modeling of psychological processes has assumed (a) smooth and continuous change in behavior or cognitions or, if not, @) simple step bctions or thresholds. Many psychological phenomena which are not smooth and continuous, or do not meet the assumptions of simple step functions, seem to demonstrate the properties of the cusp or butterfly catastrophes. Catastrophe models h...

Functorial semantics of topological theories

Following the categorical approach to universal algebra through algebraic theories, proposed by F.~W.~Lawvere in his PhD thesis, this paper aims at introducing a similar setting for general topology. The cornerstone of the new framework is the notion of emph{categorically-algebraic} (emph{catalg}) emph{topological theory}, whose models induce a category of topological structures. We introduce t...

Diffusion on a hypercubic lattice with pinning potential: exact results for the error-catastrophe problem in biological evolution

In the theoretical biology framework one fundamental problem is the so-called error catastrophe in Darwinian evolution models. We reexamine Eigen's fundamental equations by mapping them into a polymer depinning transition problem in a " genotype " space represented by a uni-tary hypercubic lattice {0, 1} d. The exact solution of the model shows that error catastrophe arises as a direct conseque...
